Miskolc

Miskolc is the third largest city in Hungary and according to several archaeologists the oldest inhabited area. Famous parts of the city include Miskolc-Tapolca, Lillafüred, Diósgyőr, Ómassa and Görömböly. The most important historical monument in the area is the castle of Diósgyőr.

Miskolc-Lillafüred

The city is part of Miskolc and is a famous holiday resort, where you can visit the next tourist sights:

Waterfall

It is the highest waterfall in Hungary, it is flowing from a height of 20 metres. In winter it can be visited too, the frozen waterfall is a beautiful sight.

Palace Hotel

This hotel was built between 1927 and 1930 in neo-renaissance style, this hotel is surrounded by a large park and hanging gardens.

Caves

There are three natural caves not far from the hotel, Cave Anna, István and Szeleta.

Cave Szeleta was the first cave in Hungary where traces of prehistoric humans were found.

Cave István is a therapeutic cave due to the unique quality of its air. It was discovered when a dog fell into the cave through its only natural entrance, a 15m long vent.

Lake Hámori

The artificial lake was formed in the early 19th century by the damming of the water of Szinva and Garadna creeks to supply the iron furnace with water. The lake is 1.5 kilometres long. In the summer, boats and paddle boats can be rented.

Miskolc Zoo

The zoo was built within 100 days by voluntary service. Originally it was a wildlife park showing the wild animals of the surrounding Bükk Mountains. Today not only local wild animals can be seen here, but also exotic animals like camels, monkeys, parrots, tigers, leopards. The zoo is home to about 500 animals of almost 100 different species from other continents.

Miskolc-Diósgyőr

Diósgyőr Castle

Diósgyőr is a historical town. The medieval castle in Diósgyőr was a favourite holiday residence of Hungarian kings and queens, today it is a popular tourist attraction.

In every year the Diósgyőr Castle Plays are organised, the event attracts families and children.

Miskolc City centre

Miskolc city centre is not as rich in monuments as that of the surrounding cities. On the Main Street there are historical buildings like the Theatre, Movie, city hall and some modern shopping centres.

Miskolc-Avas Hill

The Avas is a hill (234 m) in the heart of Miskolc. On the hilltop there is the Avas lookout tower, the symbol of the city. There is a tourist way from the city centre of Miskolc to the hilltop, where the lookout tower is located.
